Resumen del Proyecto
Sexually transmitted tropical viral infections/diseases (STVI) are of public health concern. Worldwide, it is estimated that more than a million people acquire sexually transmitted infections (STI) every day; though in low-income countries the burden is greater. STI in Bolivia, are understudied and poorly documented, frequently they are managed by symptoms, though most of them, including viral infections are asymptomatic. Unrecognized/untreated STVI could lead to a wider dissemination, persistent infections and chronic diseases i.e. infections by herpes simplex (HSV) and papilloma virus (HPV). Thus, epidemiologic studies and the biologic characterization of STVI are needed to develop appropriate strategies for prevention, identification, treatment and control. Among population, women are disproportionally vulnerable to acquire and suffer STI. Although, innate immune responses at genital tract may lead to a ‘natural control’ of viral infections, diseases such as genital herpes and human papilloma virus infection-associated cervical cancer are highly prevalent among Bolivian women. Therefore, throughout this collaboration we seek to improve the health condition of our women through research on i) the epidemiology of HSV...Ver mas

Objetivo General
-
Improve the health condition of Bolivian women from the Amazon through research on sexually transmitted viral infections, particularly the biological characterization of HSV and HPV infections, the evaluation of the innate immunity of our population and the identification of natural products with potential effect at prevention and/or treatment of these infections.
