Resumen del Proyecto
Summary Acute Diarrheal Diseases (ADD) represents a major public health problem in developing countries. According to the World Health Organization (WHO 2008) each year there are around 2 billion diarrheal episodes that are responsible for the death of ca 2 million (1.7 - 2.5 million) children under 5 years of age, ranking second among all causes of infectious disease deaths worldwide (Walker et al., 2012). In Bolivia, where child mortality rate is one of the highest in Latin America and the Caribbean region, ADD account for the fourth highest percentage of deaths in the region (UNICEF, 2009). Conservative estimates, place the death toll from diarrheal diseases at 13,000 to 15,000 deaths per year, with most of these occurring in children less than 2 years of age. Moreover, enteric infections that occur during early childhood have lasting detrimental effects on later physical and cognitive development impairment of affected children (Guerrant et al., 2002). An inadequate water supply, improper sanitation, overcrowding, malnutrition and lack of primary health care, are the main factors...Ver mas
